“Their test kits had expired” — Woman shares experience after health centre tested her HIV-positive

A Nigerian woman has recounted the emotional trauma she experienced after a health centre allegedly told her she was HIV-positive while she was eight months pregnant, only for subsequent tests at three other hospitals to return negative results.

The woman shared the experience on social media, revealing that the incident happened four years ago and left her devastated before her husband helped her seek further medical tests.

Recounting her initial reaction, she said, “I cried my eyes out, ran home, and told my husband. He said, “It can’t be possible, baby.””

Health centre allegedly blames expired test kits

According to the woman, she and her husband visited their main hospital for another test, which returned a negative result. They subsequently visited two other hospitals, where the results were also negative.

She said her husband later confronted the health centre over the initial result.

The woman alleged that the facility’s chief apologised and explained that its HIV test kits had expired, adding that staff had continued using them while waiting for a fresh supply from the government.

She expressed shock that the facility allegedly continued using the kits despite their expiry, especially given the potential consequences of an inaccurate result.

Woman reflects on emotional trauma

Reflecting on the incident four years later, the woman said the experience could have affected her marriage and caused additional distress during her pregnancy.

She lamented the emotional burden she endured at a vulnerable time in her life, questioning how such an incident could happen in a healthcare facility.

Her account highlights the importance of reliable testing procedures, proper medical supplies and accurate communication of HIV test results.
