In a statement shared on its official X account on Thursday, the professional body said its verification found that the name “Mary Habila” was absent from the database of registered physiotherapists.

According to the NSP, the development highlights the importance of verifying professional credentials before identifying individuals as members of regulated professions.
The society stressed that public officials and other stakeholders should rely on official records rather than assumptions when describing a person’s professional status.

Mary Habila, 26, died on June 27 at a residence linked to the Minister of Works, David Umahi, in Ebonyi State, a case that has generated widespread public attention.

Umahi has denied any wrongdoing, saying Habila was “like a daughter” to him and insisting there was no evidence of foul play.

He said she had worked with him for years and had received financial support from him for previous medical treatment.

He also disclosed that she reportedly complained of nose bleeding during a phone conversation with her boyfriend shortly before she was found dead.
