The Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (NSP) has stated that the late Mary Habila was not listed in its official register of licensed physiotherapists, following checks through the relevant regulatory authorities.

The clarification comes amid growing public interest in the circumstances surrounding her death.

In a statement shared on its official X account on Thursday, the professional body said its verification found that the name “Mary Habila” was absent from the database of registered physiotherapists.

Society urges accuracy over professional identity

According to the NSP, the development highlights the importance of verifying professional credentials before identifying individuals as members of regulated professions.

The society stressed that public officials and other stakeholders should rely on official records rather than assumptions when describing a person’s professional status.

It added that concerns about qualifications should be addressed through the appropriate regulatory processes instead of speculation.

The NSP also urged respect for the integrity of regulated professions, saying the public deserves accurate information while professionals deserve truthful representation of their qualifications and identities.

Despite its clarification, the organisation expressed condolences to Habila’s family and loved ones, describing her death as a tragic loss. It prayed for the peaceful repose of her soul.

Death remains under investigation

Mary Habila, 26, died on June 27 at a residence linked to the Minister of Works, David Umahi, in Ebonyi State, a case that has generated widespread public attention.

Umahi has denied any wrongdoing, saying Habila was “like a daughter” to him and insisting there was no evidence of foul play.

He said she had worked with him for years and had received financial support from him for previous medical treatment.

He also disclosed that she reportedly complained of nose bleeding during a phone conversation with her boyfriend shortly before she was found dead.

The incident has sparked calls from several groups, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, for an independent investigation. Some have also urged the minister to step aside while police conclude their probe.

An autopsy, expected to help establish the cause of death, has not yet been carried out following reported objections from Habila’s family based on cultural beliefs. Police investigations into the case are ongoing.
