Games went down in the Africa Cup of Nations yesterday as teams played their Matchday one fixtures. We saw Nigeria take on Egypt and Sudan face Guinea-Bissau in group D, while Algeria took on Sierra Leone in Group E.
Nigeria won Egypt yesterday through Kelechi Iheanacho’s goal in the first half of the match and topped group D table. The Leicester City forward scored one of the best goals we’ve seen in the tournament so far with Joe Aribo providing a brilliant assist for the goal. It was a well built goal from the Super Eagles and a well deserved lead as well as they dominated play in the first half of the match and had better chances of scoring.
Egypt had fewer chances created in the match, Mohamed Salah barely got a touch as the Super Eagles defenders won’t let him. Players like Zaidu Sanusi made it difficult for Mohamed Salah to get behind the Super Eagles defense. His teammates relied heavily on him but he failed to deliver. Well, it’s not over yet as they have two more group fixtures. Egypt will have to win their next two games to ensure their qualification to the next stage of the competition.
Sudan played a disappointing goalless draw with Guinea-Bissau in yesterday’s match. It was one of the disappointing performances we’ve seen in the tournament so far, both teams failed to make any huge attempt on goal. Guinea-Bissau would have taken the lead in the final minutes of the match if Pele had scored from the penalty spot. It was the first penalty missed in the tournament so far.
Algeria played a draw with Sierra Leone in their opening fixture, the defending champions couldn’t get past Sierra Leone in Group E. Sierra Leone’s goalkeeper Mohamed Kamara was named the man of the match after making brilliant saves to deny Algeria multiple times.
Here’s how the Africa Cup of Nations group D and group E table looks like after yesterday’s games.
