A lady has shared a troubling experience she encountered while travelling outside Lagos, recounting how an attempt to help a distressed stranger nearly got her labelled a thief.

According to the lady, the incident happened when she noticed a woman shouting in public about a missing mobile phone. The woman appeared visibly distressed as she described the device she had lost.

 

The lady said she felt sympathy for the stranger and decided to offer words of comfort, hoping the missing phone would eventually be recovered.

 

Accused after showing sympathy

While speaking with the woman, the lady’s own phone became visible. She explained that the device happened to be the same model as the one being described by the owner of the missing phone.

 

The situation quickly escalated when the distressed woman suddenly accused her of being responsible for the theft.

A crowd gathered within moments, and the lady found herself being confronted by several people who believed the allegation.

 

She said she repeatedly tried to explain that the phone belonged to her and that she had only approached the woman to help calm her down.

 

Intervention changes the situation

As tensions rose, a man stepped forward and urged those present to allow the accused lady explain herself properly before any conclusions were reached.

 

“But the part that still shocks me till today is that she didn’t even apologize. She just looked at me and said, “Just go, abeg I thought maybe I’ve found my phone.” That was it. No sorry. No explanation. Nothing.”

 

The lady noted that no apology followed the remark. She added that the experience has remained memorable because of how quickly public suspicion turned against her despite her attempt to assist.

 

The incident has sparked discussion online about mistaken accusations, mob reactions, and the importance of verifying facts before reaching conclusions.
