Odumeje said Christians who choose to pay their tithes should do so as a personal matter between themselves and God, while arguing that failure to pay should not be presented as a barrier to salvation.

“If you don’t pay your tithe, you cannot go to heaven. If you don’t pay your tithe, God will not bless you. I am not here for that kind of nonsense.”
He added that although he believes tithing is real, he questioned the emphasis some churches place on the practice.

“If you want to pay God’s tithe, it’s between you and God. Tithe is real, but that is not why you’re being in church to be teaching.”

‘That is criminal’

The prophet further described the practice of making tithing a major condition for church membership or divine blessings as “criminal.”
Advertisment
“That is criminal. And God can never perform the kind miracle he is performing in those kind of churches.”

Odumeje also alleged that some churches prosper financially because their members have been subjected to what he described as “brainwash.”
Advertisment
“They will be prospering because you submitted to their brainwash. That’s all.”
