“Stop comparing Wizkid to my father” — Seun Kuti defends Fela’s legacy

Seun Kuti has reacted strongly to ongoing comparisons between Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and Nigerian superstar Wizkid, urging Nigerians to stop drawing unnecessary parallels and allow his late father’s legacy to rest.

Why the Wizkid–Fela comparison is wrong, according to Seun

The musician and activist said the constant comparisons are disrespectful and misplaced, stressing that no one in his family has ever tried to place Fela above other global music icons.

In a video making the rounds online, Seun stated that his family has never compared Fela to international legends like Bob Marley or Michael Jackson, questioning why Nigerians are quick to compare contemporary artistes to his father.

He explained that greatness does not need to be forced and that each artiste should be appreciated in their own lane.

We never call my father the new Bob Marley or the new Michael Jackson. So why are people always trying to compare Wizkid to Fela? Let everyone be who they are,” Seun said.

He added that while he respects Wizkid’s achievements and recognises his impact in the global music space, comparing him to Fela diminishes the uniqueness of both artistes.

According to him, Fela’s influence went beyond music and into politics, activism and cultural revolution.

My father was not just a musician, he was a movement. Wizkid is doing great, but they are not the same thing. Let Wizkid be Wizkid, let Fela be Fela,” he added.

Seun also warned that such comparisons often fuel unnecessary online arguments and fan wars, instead of celebrating Nigerian music as a whole.
