Ghanaian-American singer Amaarae has shed light on a beloved West African food habit the addition of boiled eggs to nearly every meal.

Speaking on a podcast, Amaarae explained that this tradition in Ghana isn’t just about flavor, but stems from historical and economic factors.

She noted that in the past, meat was typically reserved for the head of the household often the father leaving mothers to find affordable protein alternatives for their children.

“Egg became a cheap add-on for protein,” Amaarae said, adding that items like chicken were considered luxuries, only served during festive seasons like Christmas.
