The internet has blown up with billions of people on various social media networks connecting with their friends, families, businesses and others. It is through this medium yahoo boys use to catch their victims.

Firstly, a lot of people are on the internet to find their perfect soulmate. Unfortunately, in foreign countries, the rate of singles/divorced persons looking for love is much higher than in African countries. These yahoo boys now pretend to be a foreigner, thereby hunting for their prey on the net.

Eventually, when they find a person (man or woman) looking for a soulmate, they pretend and deceive the victim into trusting them by expressing fake love on the net.

After having a long conversation, the victim builds trust on the fraudster and this is where the defrauding happens.

These fraudsters are basically after the victim’s money. So they start formulating lies and convincing the victim to send them some money. Once the victim begins to send money, they keep on requesting for more to the extent of convincing the victim to send their credit card details, SSN number and other personal information of the victim.

If the victim complies to their demands, he/she is at the verge of going bankrupt and even owning bank loans after the scammer must have drained the victim’s bank account.

How can you spot a Romance Scam on the net?

It is usually not easy, especially when you are desperate to find true love on the internet. However, there are some red flags you should take note when having a conversation with your “supposed soulmate” (fraudster).

Firstly, if the supposed soulmate keeps asking you in depth questions at early conversation stage, such as, What do you do for a living? How much is your monthly income? Etc. That is a suspected romance scam.

Also, when the supposed soulmate begins to ask for some of your personal information like credit card details, bank accounts or other Information that concerns money, that person is a suspected fraudster.

Unfortunately, the victims of these romance scams are not only foreigners but also some of our fellow Nigerians. In essence, we have to be very careful in the cyberspace. Nobody is real until you meet them off the internet.
