A Nigerian mother has condemned Madonna University over the expulsion of one nursing student and suspension of 14 others after they were reportedly caught creating a dance video inside a hospital.

Reacting to the development in a video, the woman acknowledged that the students crossed professional boundaries by creating such content in a hospital.

She noted that nursing is a professional field and not a platform for content creation, stressing that the students should have been more conscious of their conduct while wearing their identity uniforms.

‘That Content Is Not Welcoming’
The mother also criticised the caption attached to the video, which reportedly read, “No Fall Sick Na Gen Z Full Hospital.”

She described the caption as frightening from a patient’s perspective, saying it could give the impression that there was no hope for people seeking treatment at the hospital.
“That content is not warming. It’s not welcoming especially for the patients,” she said.

While she agreed that the students deserved to be disciplined, she disagreed with the decision to expel one of them.

‘The Expulsion Is Too Harsh’

She argued that expulsion was excessive, particularly because the incident involved a dance video and there was no indication that any patient was harmed.

“Do I agree with the punishment? The expulsion is too harsh,” she stated.

The woman pointed out that the affected student was already in the final year after spending several years in school, paying school fees and completing clinical training.

“For a final year student, sleepless nights, school fees for five years, clinic has gone. Just like that. For a first time offence and it’s a dance video,” she said.

She questioned whether counselling and other corrective measures could have been considered before the university took such a severe step.

“No patient was harmed. No drugs were stolen. What does counselling say? Punishment should correct and not destroy,” she added.

Calls for Madonna University to Reverse Expulsion
Advertisment
The mother also backed calls from the National Association of Nigerian Nursing Students for the university to issue a warning rather than expel the student.

She described the request as fair and urged the institution to consider reversing the expulsion and replacing it with a heavy suspension.

“Pamper justice with mercy,” she said.
Advertisment
She maintained that the students should face consequences for their actions but should also be given an opportunity to learn from the incident.

Mother Calls for Digital Ethics in Nursing Education
Advertisment
Beyond the immediate punishment, she urged universities to use the incident as a case study and introduce digital ethics into their academic programmes.
Advertisment
She argued that young people who are heavily involved in social media may sometimes struggle to distinguish between online trends and professional boundaries.

“These Gen Z students, they don’t know boundary between trend and professional,” she said.
The woman concluded that the students’ actions required discipline but did not warrant ending a final year student’s academic journey.
“Is expulsion justifiable? No. Is discipline needed? Yes,” she said.
