“I’ve never seen a country with a higher rate of dumb citizens than Nigeria” — Charly Boy

Veteran Nigerian entertainer and social commentator Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has criticised Nigerians over what he described as the normalisation of poor governance and worsening living conditions in the country.

Charly Boy made the remarks in a video circulating on social media, where he expressed frustration over the state of infrastructure, electricity supply and food prices in Nigeria.

He questioned why basic amenities such as good roads and steady electricity are often viewed as privileges rather than necessities.

“I’ve never seen a country with a higher rate of dumb citizens than Nigeria. Nigeria is a country where good roads are treated as luxury. A country where people with steady electricity are classified as the rich,” he said.

The social commentator also expressed concern over the rising cost of food, questioning how prices could increase dramatically without sufficient public accountability.

“And a country where the price of food can jump from 10,000 to 100,000 overnight with no questions asked. And you call that a country?” he asked.

Charly Boy further questioned the role of citizens in shaping the direction of the country, arguing that Nigerians have a responsibility to demand accountability from those in government.

“Now tell me, can a nation exist without its citizens? No. Then what are the citizens doing?” he said.

According to him, some citizens have instead focused on entertainment and social media content while becoming accustomed to the country’s challenges.

“Watching creators make jokes and normalising the breakdown. And watching corrupt leaders campaign only to turn out and cheer them on anyways. What a shame,” he added.

Charly Boy acknowledged Nigeria’s vast resources but blamed what he described as poor leadership and the silence of citizens for the country’s struggles.

“What a great nation with vast resources yet trapped under poor leadership and the voiceless citizens,” he said before ending the video by telling the person filming him, “Take this camera out of my face.”
