“I shared a false and misleading post” – Lady’s apology to OPay surfaces after arrest

An apology post by a Nigerian lady who shared a false notice claiming that OPay was shutting down its operations has surfaced online following her arrest by the police.

The woman, identified by the police as 27-year-old Hafsat Abubakar, had earlier acknowledged sharing the information and apologised to OPay for the post.

The apology was shared on her X account, @haifah_er_abba, on August 31, 2026, days before police reportedly arrested her.

Lady Apologises to OPay

In the post addressed to OPay, the lady explained that she had shared information claiming the fintech company would go on an indefinite break from September 1.

She said the information had already been circulating for days before she posted it on her account.

She wrote:

“I have come to the notice that it was false and misleading information.

“I have taken down my post, @OPay_NG operations are normal and there is no break or shutdown, I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience and reposting misleading information, Thank you for your understanding.”

She also noted that she had removed the post after discovering that the information was false.

Police Arrest Woman Over Fake OPay Notice

The apology comes days before the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) announced the arrest of Abubakar over the alleged creation and circulation of the fabricated OPay shutdown notice.

According to the police, OPay Digital Services Limited submitted a petition on August 31, requesting an investigation into the source of the fake document.

The NPF-NCCC said its digital forensic investigation traced the document to the X account @haifah_er_abba, which it alleged was registered and operated by Abubakar.

Police operatives reportedly arrested her on September 4.
