British singer, Ed Sheeran is set to return to the stage in Philadelphia on Saturday amid boycott calls and protests following the removal of rapper Macklemore from his US tour.

Macklemore was dropped from Sheeran’s Loop Tour after making pro Palestinian comments, including shouting “Free Palestine” during a performance in New Jersey earlier this month. Venue owners reportedly objected to having him on upcoming shows.

Four supporting acts quit Sheeran’s tour

The controversy escalated after four supporting acts announced their withdrawal from the tour. They included Finneas, Aaron Rowe, Beoga and Lukas Graham, who left following Macklemore’s removal.

Sheeran has denied being responsible for Macklemore’s removal, saying the decision was made by the tour promoter after venues indicated they would not host shows with the rapper on the line-up.

The singer also addressed criticism over his position on the conflict, saying, “I am not complicit. I have my personal views on this devastating conflict.”

He added, “those who come to my shows do not expect a political forum.”

Protest planned outside Philadelphia concert

A pro Palestinian rally was scheduled to take place near Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, where Sheeran is expected to perform.

Police said there would be an appropriate presence around the venue to help protect concertgoers, employees and residents. No replacement opening acts or backing band had been announced ahead of the concert.

The controversy has placed Sheeran’s tour under increased public scrutiny, while the singer maintains that his concerts should remain focused on music rather than political debate.
