Nollywood actor Bucci Franklin has shared a deeply personal account of his early life struggles, revealing how childhood abandonment led him into drug use at a young age.

Speaking during a recent interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the AMVCA 2026 Best Supporting Actor winner opened up about growing up without his father’s presence.

Franklin disclosed that his father left the family while he was still a child, leaving his mother to shoulder the responsibility of raising him alone.

“I was a hot mess as a child. My dad abandoned me. My mom raised me alone, and I turned to drugs,” he said during the conversation.
He explained that the absence of a father figure created emotional voids and confusion during his formative years, which eventually influenced his behaviour.

The actor noted that public perception of successful celebrities often hides difficult past experiences, adding that his own journey was far from smooth.

According to him, lacking proper guidance while growing up contributed to poor choices, including his struggle with substance abuse, which he described as one of the darkest periods of his life.

Although he did not go into explicit detail about his addiction, Franklin admitted it took a serious toll on him before he was able to turn things around.

He credited his mother as the key figure in his recovery, saying her resilience, prayers, and sacrifices played a major role in helping him rebuild his life.
