“My mom tricked me back to Nigeria, tore my American passport” – Man recounts traumatic childhood experience

A Nigerian man has recounted a traumatic childhood experience after his mother moved him from Atlanta, United States, to Nigeria at the age of 17, revealing how the decision changed the course of his life.

In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), the man, who grew up in Atlanta from the age of three, said he enjoyed his life there and attended public school throughout his childhood.

However, after his sophomore year of high school, his mother suddenly announced that the family was moving to Nigeria.

“One day after my sophomore year, my mom tells me, ‘Hey, I’m moving to Nigeria.’ And I look at her and I say, ‘Congratulations.’ She looked at me back and says, ‘No, we’re all going.’ I’m like, ‘I’m not going.’”

He revealed that his friends tried to help him stay in America, with his pastor even volunteering to let him live with him. However, his mother refused and later became emotional while asking him to promise that he would board the flight.

After they arrived in Lagos, he said his mother tore his American passport and enrolled him in boarding school. Six months later, he escaped and went to the American embassy with his friends to seek help.

“They offered me a flight back to America. But the problem is, if I got on that plane, my family would have disowned me. And I said, ‘You know what? One more year will not kill me.’ And that’s how my life started in Nigeria, and I ended up in London for my undergrad and master’s,” he added.

His story has generated reactions online, with many discussing his mother’s decision and the impact it had on his life.

Looking back, he said he is grateful he left Atlanta, believing his life would have been worse if he had remained there.
