“I swore to fight him, he was the worst IGP ever” – Sowore reacts to Egbetokun’s removal

Nigerian activist Omoyele Sowore has reacted strongly to the removal of former Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, describing him as “the worst police IG in recent times.”

Egbetokun’s exit followed the acceptance of his resignation by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who subsequently appointed Tunji Disu as the Acting Inspector General of Police.

 

The development has sparked fresh conversations about leadership, accountability, and reforms within the Nigeria Police Force.

Reacting to the adjustment, Sowore said:

 

“We removed Egbetokun, and I must tell you this. I started having a problem with Egbetokun when he arrested people who were protesting bad governance and even charged 10-year-olds for treason in this country.

That’s the day I swore that I must fight this guy to finish.”

 

He further stated that he had repeatedly warned Tinubu against extending Egbetokun’s tenure, describing such a move as a grave mistake.

“When his tenure was extended, even before it was extended, I had been warning Tinubu not to extend it. This guy is the worst police IG in recent times,” he emphasized.

With a new acting IGP now in place, attention has shifted to whether the leadership change will translate into meaningful reforms, improved professionalism, and better protection of citizens’ rights within Nigeria’s policing system.
