Eileen, a 90-year-old woman, married her husband’s best friend earlier in the week. Her story is becoming viral.
Eileen and Vince Triggs were married for 71-years before their death at 96. They had four children, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
But, Vince told his wife before he died that he wanted his wife to be with someone who loved her as much as him. He suggested Ron Fulton, his best friend, as the only person who would.
Eileen and Vince’s son Mike Triggs told the story of his dying wish to his father this week, after his mother’s marriage to his best friend.
Mike Triggs wrote a Facebook post on his dad’s final day, saying his dad “expressed his desire that mom not spend too much time grieving and it was his desire that at some point she might remarry and be able to share the rest of her life with someone who would care and love her as he did.”
Mike wrote that his mom called it “crazy speech”.
Mike also wrote that his dad said to him: “While there would certain to be many, he knew that the only man that would treat his daughter as he would want it to be treated was Ron Fulton, his best friend.”
They became fast friends after meeting in 2015. Ron’s wife, Melba, was a friend of Eileen’s until she passed away in 2019.
After Vince’s death, Eileen and Ron spent time together. He helped her clean out Vince’s closet. They shared meals together and watched football matches. They went to concerts.
Eileen explained that Ron asked me if I would be open to going to Arizona for a few months. I said no because I wouldn’t consider going with someone I wasn’t married to,” Eileen shared with TODAY Parents. “The next day he came back and said, ‘would you consider going to Arizona if we got married?’ and I said yes.”
They were married December 26.
The couple’s former spouses and friends were very much on everyone’s minds the day of the wedding, Mike Triggs told TODAY.
He stated that both he and his wife are confident that their spouses will approve and give blessing because neither would like the other to be lonely and would like them to be happy.
Mike Triggs said in many ways, it’s like a “Cinderella story.”
While his mum and Ron were cleaning out Vince’s closet, they came across a pair of custom-made boots.
Ron wanted to try them on, but Eileen said they wouldn’t fit. His dad’s boots, Mike said, were a perfect fit. Eileen’s ring, which she had intended to sell, was also a similar story. It belonged her deceased husband, but Ron tried on the ring and it fit perfectly.
Triggs said Ron will never take his dad’s place. In a Facebook post, he said, “Obviously this came as shock to all of us. Although it seemed a bit too soon, Mom is 90 and Ron 87.
“Neither of them is getting older and it makes sense that they can be happy, go places, and do things together while they are in good health.
“And after all, that is what Dad wanted. He didn’t have a stipulation that she wait two and half years, he just wanted his wife of 71 years to be loved and be happy.”
