Nigerian rapper and YBNL boss Olamide has clarified that Afrobeats star Wizkid began his music career before him, saying the latter has been in the industry a year or two longer.

The statement was made during a recent interview with streamer Azeeez and aims to correct the long-held notion that both artists started at the same time.

Fans often link the pair because both rose to nationwide prominence around 2010, Wizkid with the January release “Holla at Your Boy” and Olamide with the later single “Eni Duro.”

Their parallel rise was cemented when both were nominated in the Next Rated category at the 2011 Headies Awards, a contest won that year by Wizkid.

Olamide told Azeeez that the public timeline has been misunderstood. “Wizkid and I didn’t start doing music at the same time. He started a year or two before me; he was already putting out music before I came,” he said.

He said his clarification was meant to set the record straight rather than diminish either artist’s achievements.

Music records and earlier collaborations support Olamide’s claim. Wizkid, who is now 35 years old,  was featured on rapper M.I Abaga’s track “Fast Money/Fast Cars” in 2008,

This appearance predated his mainstream breakthrough and indicates his earlier entry into the music scene.

Wizkid’s early exposure and quick ascent helped establish him as a leading voice in Afrobeats, while Olamide’s consistent output and influence within the rap and street-pop scenes have made him one of Nigeria’s most potent homegrown stars.

Despite recurrent comparisons, Olamide emphasized respect for Wizkid’s body of work and said his comments were meant only to correct public perception of their career timelines.

The clarification is to settle lingering debates among fans about who entered the industry first.
