New Zealand Announces New Guidelines for Working Holiday Visa Applicants

New Zealand’s immigration office has issued extensive rules outlining how foreign nationals can apply for a Working Holiday visa, from account setup to eligibility for renewals.

According to the official New Zealand Immigration website, all Working Holiday visa applications must be submitted online and in English.

Applicants must first register an account on the online services website before uploading documents and paying any applicable fees.

One of the most significant prerequisites outlined in the rules is the need to have a valid physical passport at the time of application. Applications filed without one risk being denied.

According to the requirements, applications can only be made while the Working Holiday visa for a given country is open.

Submitting an application before the official opening date results in its automatic deletion, which the authority claims is in place to maintain the online system’s performance.

Applicants are also advised to ensure that they are applying for the suitable visa type, as a Working Holiday visa can only be given once per person for working in New Zealand, even if it has never been utilized.

The rules also detail extension options for persons who are already in New Zealand on specific Working Holiday visas.

Holders of a 12-month Canada Working Holiday Visa who are currently in the country can apply for a Working Holiday Scheme Subsequent Work Visa, which permits them to stay for up to an extra 11 months.

For UK Working Holiday Visa holders who are currently in New Zealand on a 12-month or longer visa, an extension to cover the remaining balance of the 36-month maximum period can be obtained under the Working Holiday Scheme Subsequent Work Visa.

One major exemption applies to both groups: subsequent working vacation visa applications under the UK or Canadian schemes cannot be submitted online and must be completed on paper.

Meanwhile, Canadians currently in New Zealand on a 12-month working vacation visa can request to extend their stay by up to 11 months, bringing their total time in the country to just under two years.
