She said her friend assured her the job came with accommodation and helped schedule an interview with the supposed employer.

“I reached out to a friend to help me secure a job here in Abuja because she was working at a restaurant where she stays in Kubwa, she said she knew somebody that is looking for somebody that can clean the house, like a cleaner.”

“I used to do cleaning services when I was in school, I came to meet her, I was staying at her place. While staying at her place, her landlord complained that he doesn’t need two people in a room—that he only wanted the lady to stay alone. I asked her to help me confirm from the person if accommodation is available with the job and she said yes.”

I begged her to help me talk to the person so we can schedule an interview then I’ll meet with the person, then we’ll talk about the job. When she went to work, the man came, she said the man used to work.”

She continued, “She talked to the man and the man said okay that we’re coming to meet next week. When she came home, she told me. Then next week, which means the week for the interview, she told me that the man called her and said we should come on a specific date and I said okay.”

He said we should come to Dutse. When we went there, we called him. He said we should come to OShafa bridge—that he was on a trip and when he stops there, he’ll pick us up.”

“They arrived around 2pm and waited until 4pm before the man eventually came, accompanied by a heavyset lady. “He called us and my friend picked the call because she was the one that had the man’s number. He picked and waved his hand and we entered the car,” she recounted.

He took us far from where he picked us from—he was entering one village. Suddenly, we arrived at the place, he took us to a house, more like a guest house. He took us to a room, I don’t know how he secured the place—whether it was a hotel but it’s more like a guest house. It was just us and the staff.”

As time went by, she grew uneasy. “I told my friend that I hope we finish this in time because I’ve never slept outside before. Due to the fact that she’s the one that introduced me to the person, I can’t tell her to let’s go because she’s just trying to help me out.”

Later, the man brought them water and minerals. “He asked for my qualifications, he asked people to bring food for us but I told him it’s already late and he told us to wait—that the food will soon be here. Around 11pm, we were still there. I told my friend we can’t sleep here. She said we should wait for the food—that after we ate the food, we can go back.”

“When the man came around 11pm, he brought water and minerals to us and I was like, ‘Where is the food?’ I told him I’m asthmatic, that I don’t take mineral. So I drank the water and gave the mineral to my friend.”

“He left and immediately he left, I went straight to close the door. My friend drank the mineral and she started telling me that she wants to sleep. Around 12, he came and started knocking on the door. I opened the door for him and he came inside and sat on the chair.”

“He said he wishes to talk to me and I said ok. He said we should go outside since my friend is already sleeping. I went to where the other lady that was in the car was—the other room.”

“She was asking me how my health issue is. She told me she’ll help me to talk to the man—that he’ll employ me because I really need the job.”

“I sat down there, we were talking. The man went out immediately I came to see the lady. When I told the woman I wanted to go back to the room where I was, she said we’re having a conversation. I said no—that I just wanted to be with my friend because she’s the only one that is sleeping. So she said I should wait for the man to come, that after she has spoken to the man, I can go back to the room.”

When they came, they spoke one language, I’ve not heard it before in my life. They talked to each other, I don’t know what they said.”

“Then I stood up, I was going. When I opened the door, it’s like they hit me in my head. That was what I remembered last. When I woke up, my hands were tied to the wardrobe, my legs were tied to the chairs where the lady had sat down on and I met so many different people like thugs. They went inside the room, they were like five.”

I asked, ‘Where is my friend?’ One of them said my friend should be dead by now. I was pleading. I begged the lady to let me go. The lady opened her mouth and told me that I should just give them whatever they want.”

That was when a guy came, he held me down, he offed my clothes. Then they started having sex with me—they did it one after the other including the man himself. That was how they did it, I think. I dozed off. Then when I woke up, they already left with my bag, my purse—my inhaler was inside—my phone, my friend’s phone and everything.”

“I managed to get down from the bed and I went to my friend’s room and she was not moving, but she was breathing.”

The lady broke down in tears as she narrated the horrifying incident.
