“I didn’t see his message on time” – AY Comedian laments as he recalls Asake’s 2019 plea for help

Nigerian comedian and actor Ayodeji Makun, popularly known as AY Comedian, has recalled an old Instagram message he received from Afrobeats star Asake years before the singer rose to international prominence.

AY shared the revelation after attending Asake’s sold-out concert at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, as part of the singer’s “In God We Trust” tour.

Reflecting on the singer’s journey, AY revealed that Asake had sent him a direct message in 2019 asking him to support his music, although he did not see the message at the time.

‘I Didn’t Get to See This Message on Time’

According to AY, he recently remembered the message while reflecting on how much Asake’s career has changed over the years.

“I remember when this boy sent me a message in my DM on Instagram. I didn’t even get to see this message on time. This was years ago, sometime during 2019,” he said.

AY displayed the old message in the video, showing Asake introducing himself as “Ololade” and asking the comedian to listen to and support one of his songs.

“Good Evening sir. I’m OLOLADE. How are you doing sir? I’m here for help, KING AY. I just drop a record titled – African Something. You vibing to the song is a lot to my career,” Asake wrote.

The singer also appealed directly to AY for assistance.

“KING AY, Help a son sir. May God bless you and your family. I love you KING AY,” the message read.

‘I’m Not Saying This to Take Any Credit’

AY was careful to point out that he was not sharing the old message to claim responsibility for Asake’s eventual success.

The comedian attributed the singer’s rise to his talent, dedication and God’s grace.

“I’m not saying all of this to take any credit. That glory belongs to God and his talent and of course the hard work that is put into all of this,” he said.

For AY, seeing Asake perform before a large audience in Houston provided a striking reminder of the singer’s journey from an upcoming artiste seeking support to a globally recognised performer.

‘Never Look Down on Anyone’

AY used the experience to encourage people to treat others with kindness and respect, particularly those who approach them seeking opportunities.

He noted that someone who is relatively unknown today could become highly celebrated in the future.

“The truth is that the person asking to be seen today may become the person the whole world will celebrate tomorrow. So be good to people, respect their dreams, never look down on anyone because you simply cannot tell what tomorrow brings,” AY said.

Asake Greets AY Backstage

Following the Houston concert, AY revealed that Asake’s management took him backstage, where the singer came over to greet him.

The comedian said Asake’s success had not taken away his humility and praised the singer for his performance.

“Ah Asake, you were simply phenomenal,” AY said.

He also congratulated the singer, celebrating his growing impact both within Nigeria and internationally.

“Nigeria celebrates you, Africa celebrates you and the world is seeing all your doings and workings right now,” he added.
