“I carried my guitar to her burial and sang through tears” — Dunsin Oyekan opens up on wife’s death

Nigerian gospel minister Dunsin Oyekan has opened up on how he navigated one of the darkest moments of his life,  the burial of his late wife, Adedoyin, revealing that he led worship at her graveside as a way of surrendering his pain to God.

A painful moment turned into worship

Speaking in an emotional reflection shared during a recent ministration, the singer recounted how he deliberately carried his guitar to the burial ceremony and chose worship over despair.

Oyekan explained that despite battling grief and tears, he knew his response to the tragedy would determine whether the pain consumed him or transformed him.

We were at the burial, I made sure I went with my guitar. That morning we started singing, and I was leading worship and praising God. As they said I should pay my last rite and pour the sand, I carried my guitar and sang, ‘God, You are so good to me.’ People were crying, I was crying too, my voice was shaking, but I was still singing.”

Six years after, a testimony of healing

The worship leader said the painful experience birthed songs that remain unreleased, describing the season as one that deepened his spiritual walk.

I knew if I did not handle that pain well, it was either I would go down or rise above it. People’s comfort was not entering my head, but in that season, God gave me songs.”

Adedoyin Oyekan died on May 18, 2019, leaving behind two children. In 2022, Oyekan also survived a near-fatal auto accident, a moment many fans described as another testimony of divine preservation.
