“I broke down in tears” — Man shares story of boy imprisoned for 47 years after damaging car

A Nigerian man has stirred emotions online after sharing the heartbreaking story of a 13-year-old boy who was allegedly imprisoned for 47 years after accidentally damaging a parked car in Maiduguri, Borno State.

According to the account, the boy was selling sugarcane in a wheelbarrow for his father when he moved under a nearby tree to escape the scorching sun. While pushing the wheelbarrow, he reportedly brushed against a parked vehicle, causing one of its headlamps to fall off.

Unable to find the owner, the boy allegedly decided to wait at the scene because his conscience would not allow him to leave. The vehicle owner, who was said to have been observing prayers at a nearby mosque, later returned, called the police and allegedly had the boy detained.

Sharing the story, the man said, “Recently, this 13-year old boy just got released from prison, after spending 47 years in prison, at the age of 60 years.”

 

He added, “He was literally moved from one prison to the other all over Nigeria in the course of this 47 years in prison.”

According to the post, the man claimed the former inmate eventually regained his freedom after receiving a pardon from a state governor.
