A former Presidential candidate of the defunct National Republic Convention (NRC) in the 1993 annulled election, Alhaji Bashir Othman Tofa, is dead.
The elder statesman reportedly passed away in the early hours of Monday, January 3, 2022, at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano after a brief illness.
A close associate of the deceased, Magaji Galadima (Kachallan Kano), announced the death in a Facebook post.
Mr Galadima wrote: “Allahu akbar, we eventually lost Alh. Bashir Tofa. May Allah grant him eternal rest.”
Tofa contested and lost a presidential election against late Chief Mashood Abiola, an election that was later annulled by General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.
The politician was rumoured to have died last year but the news of his death was refuted by a family friend who said he was still alive but critically sick.
The business tycoon will be buried today in line with Islamic rites.
