The Federal Government of Nigeria has said it is ready to sanction Russia in line with the United Nations’ resolution to “adopt and impose sanctions” on the country for invading Ukraine.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, who made this known while featuring on a Channels TV programme on Monday, stressed that the Nigerian government does not condone Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
He stated that the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration will comply with UN resolution should sanctions be imposed on Putin’s Russia over its hostile action.
“On imposing (the) sanction, this is going to be a collective action. The United Nations has to act,” Onyeama said.
He added; “We are going to act and engage within the framework of the United Nations. So if the United Nations adopts and imposes sanctions against Russia, we will comply with UN’s resolution.
“We made that very clear, we condemned it. First of all, military force is not the solution. We have spoken up abut the territorial integrity that we recognize the integrity of Ukraine.
“As we speak, in the UN General Assembly, there is a resolution on this whole issue. Nigeria’s position on the resolution is very clear, that we do not condone this military intervention in another country.”
Meanwhile, following the arrival of its delegation in Belarus for talks with Russian negotiators, Ukraine has demanded an immediate ceasefire and troop withdrawal.
