Mike Triggs wrote a Facebook post on his dad’s final day, saying his dad “expressed his desire that mom not spend too much time grieving and it was his desire that at some point she might remarry and be able to share the rest of her life with someone who would care and love her as he did.”

Eileen explained that Ron asked me if I would be open to going to Arizona for a few months. I said no because I wouldn’t consider going with someone I wasn’t married to,” Eileen shared with TODAY Parents. “The next day he came back and said, ‘would you consider going to Arizona if we got married?’ and I said yes.”

Ron wanted to try them on, but Eileen said they wouldn’t fit. His dad’s boots, Mike said, were a perfect fit. Eileen’s ring, which she had intended to sell, was also a similar story. It belonged her deceased husband, but Ron tried on the ring and it fit perfectly.

Triggs said Ron will never take his dad’s place. In a Facebook post, he said, “Obviously this came as shock to all of us. Although it seemed a bit too soon, Mom is 90 and Ron 87.

“Neither of them is getting older and it makes sense that they can be happy, go places, and do things together while they are in good health.

“And after all, that is what Dad wanted. He didn’t have a stipulation that she wait two and half years, he just wanted his wife of 71 years to be loved and be happy.”
