Nanyah: FMC Abuja breaks silence on singer’s demise, denies negligence claim

The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, Abuja, has issued an official statement addressing widespread social media claims surrounding the death of Ms. Ifunanya Lucy Nwagene, popularly known as Nanyah.

Nanya passed away on January 31, 2026, after suffering severe neurotoxic complications resulting from a snake bite.

Her death stirred intense online reactions, with allegations suggesting that the hospital lacked life-saving anti-snake venom at the time she was admitted.

FMC Jabi breaks silence

In a statement released on February 1, 2026, FMC Jabi firmly denied the allegations, describing them as false and misleading.

According to the hospital management, Nanya was attended to immediately upon arrival. Medical personnel reportedly initiated emergency care without delay, including resuscitation, intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen support, and the administration of polyvalent anti-snake venom.

The statement noted that a rapid clinical assessment revealed she had already developed severe neurotoxic complications from the snake bite.

Based on her condition, arrangements were promptly made to transfer her to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for advanced treatment.

However, before the transfer could be completed, her condition deteriorated suddenly.

Despite aggressive life-saving measures by the medical team, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), she could not be revived.

FMC denies claims of unavailablility of anti-venom

FMC Jabi emphasized that claims of anti-venom unavailability and medical negligence are completely unfounded, stressing that its staff acted promptly, professionally, and in accordance with standard emergency care protocols throughout the process.

The hospital affirmed its commitment to quality healthcare delivery and extended its heartfelt condolences to Nanya’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.

“After a thorough but quick evaluation, it was clear that Ms Nwagene suffered severe neurotoxic complications from the snake bite.

“Despite all efforts to stabilise her condition and transfer her to the Intensive Care Unit for further treatment, she experienced a sudden deterioration just before the transfer.

“Our team of professionals worked diligently to provide CPR and other life-saving measures; however, despite these efforts, we were unable to revive her

“The claims of non-availability of anti-snake venom and inadequate response are unfounded and do not reflect the reality of the situation. We are committed to transparency and integrity in our practices and will continue to pursue excellence in patient care,” they explained.
