The Niger State House of Assembly has passed a motion calling on Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago to enact an executive order prohibiting the observance of Marker’s Day/Sign Out ceremonies in all public and private secondary and tertiary institutions across the state.
The decision by the House followed a motion presented by Hon. Muhammad Sani Idris, representative of the Tafa constituency, who raised concerns about the adverse effects of such celebrations.

He noted that these events, meant to mark the end of schooling for final-year students, have increasingly been associated with unruly conduct, rising cases of misconduct, and immoral activities, developments that threaten the core values of the state’s education system, which seeks to foster the intellectual and moral growth of students.

Hon. Idris emphasized that what was originally a celebratory tradition has deteriorated into a trend of indiscipline.

“Ongoing trend of signing out from schools, which is presumably intended to be a celebration by final-year students, has recently been characterised by unruly behaviour and misconduct.”
The motion received unanimous support from other lawmakers, who agreed it was a timely intervention, reflecting growing public concern over the issue.
