Rey Misterio Sr., the well-known Mexican wrestler and uncle of WWE superstar Rey Mysterio Jr., passed away on December 20, 2024, at the age of 66.
His family and the Mexican wrestling organization Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide confirmed his death.
He was born Miguel Ángel López Díaz and played a key role in Mexico’s lucha libre culture.
With a career that stretched close to fifty years, he made important contributions to wrestling, performing for well-known organizations such as Pro Wrestling Revolution, Tijuana Wrestling, and the World Wrestling Association (WWA).
In addition to his own success, Misterio Sr. was a respected mentor for younger wrestlers.
He played a vital role in guiding the careers of several stars, including his nephew, WWE’s Rey Mysterio Jr., who is a three-time world champion. He also trained notable figures like Konnan, Psicosis, Halloween, and Damian 666.
Although the official cause of his death is not known, it occurred shortly after the earlier death of Robert Gutierrez, Rey Mysterio Jr.’s father.
Aalyah Gutierrez, Misterio’s daughter, took to social media to pay tribute to her uncle, showing her sincere appreciation.
“Eternally grateful for you,” she wrote. “Without you, my dad wouldn’t be the person or fighter he is today. Rest in peace, uncle.”
