The continuous friction of very tight underwear darkens the skin. That’s why it’s recommendable to wear comfortable clothing and natural fibers such as cotton. Wearing tight clothes and underwear doesn’t allow the area to be well ventilated and can lead to it getting darker.

2. Hormones.

Hormonal changes during pregnancy, puberty, and aging can lead to the darkening of the private part. The skin has melanocytes cells that are sensitive to hormones. During puberty, for instance, a sudden increase in estrogen in the body can darken the private area as per the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. In fact, in your late 30s and 40s, low estrogen as you inch towards menopause has the same effect.

Dr. Nirupama Parwanda, dermatologist and founder of Zolie Skin Clinic in New Delhi also explains that when some people gain a lot of weight, they might experience a form of insulin resistance, which may result in a condition called acanthosis nigricans. In this, the area around the vulva, especially the inner thigh, darkens.

4. Sweating.

Sweating can cause the intimate area to change color. If you sweat a lot, chances are you may notice a darker color in your intimate area. This is due to the waste products found in sweat which change the skin’s color and texture over time. If you find yourself sweating often, frequent cleaning of the area to prevent too much sweat build-up can help.
