When Super Eagles departed the shores of the country few weeks ago for the 2021 edition of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations tournament, not much was expected from them due to poor preparation and late arrival of some of the invited players to camp.
The last minutes withdrawal of most of the players also gave Nigerians the cause to be worried about their chances at the tournament.
However, the first victory against Egypt in the opening group D encounter brought hope to Nigerians. Aside from that, there are some players in the squad that have been able to bring out their full potential in the course of the three games that have been played.
Simon Moses who plies his trade as a forward for Ligue 1 side FC Nantes has been particularly impressive.
Before the tournament, many people didn’t expect much from him due to his past performance under former coach Gernot Rohr. However, the winger has grown to establish himself among the best dribblers in the ongoing tournament.
The 26-year-old lit up the tournament in Cameroon with his dribbling and pace on the right flank, and would have scored arguably the best goal of AFCON 2021 if his powerful shot had not cannoned off the crossbar in Nigeria’s last match against Guinea-Bissau.
Moses Simon has completed the most dribbles so far at AFCON 2021. Five more than his closest rival.
With the way things are going, Moses might be in contention for the best player of the tournament.
