“I left my good-paying job in Nigeria to migrate to the UK on a study visa. I was earning ₦500k monthly. I had my own place, no stress, no debt. I wasn’t even rich, but I was comfortable. I could afford little luxury, take care of my family life was stable.”

She added that her move was heavily influenced by social media posts, where many shared stories of quickly securing jobs and living soft lives abroad:

“I came here thinking things would fall into place quickly, the way people post on Instagram like they’ve gotten new jobs in weeks, that they’re living soft lives and so many things. It’s what I thought.”

But since arriving, she says all she’s received are referrals for care jobs—roles she insists she is not mentally or emotionally built for:

Since I landed, it’s been one referral after another. All of them have been care jobs. That’s the only thing people send me: care work, support workers, domiciliary care every single link is about personal care. And honestly, I can’t do it.”

“It’s not even about pride. I just know I’ll break down mentally and emotionally. I wasn’t built for that kind of work. I didn’t come here to lose myself.”

She revealed that she’s applied for over 100 non-care roles, including customer service, admin, and retail, but has been unsuccessful:

BabaAduke‍‍: “it looks like you have made ur decision already. My advice is just give up, go home, it’s not worth it. life in bongo is far better than in UK. Good road network, excellent security, top notch basic amenities, soft and easy life, that’s what nigeria have got to offer you. Your mental health is a priority, with 100k salary, you can easily go far in Nigeria.”

I also made a promise to myself never to do the care job not because I am better than those doing it but because I know I don’t have the mental mind for it. I did factory work, kitchen job, teaching assistant. It doesn’t have to be a care job. Now I am working as an accountant.”

cpt_rems: “Try looking for a job in china town since you speak Chinese.Chinese love working with chinese speaking foreigners. They might even be able to connect you with the consulate. Also look at tour companies that bring chinese people for holidays. A lot of chinese visit london every year.”
