“I stopped donating blood and she died” — Man opens up on guilt after ending relationship with sickle cell partner

A man has shared his emotional struggle after the death of his girlfriend, who was living with Sickle Cell Disease, revealing how his decision to step away from the relationship continues to haunt him.

According to his account, the relationship began during their school years, where they developed a close bond despite her health challenges.

He said the young woman, who was an orphan with limited family support, relied heavily on him during medical emergencies, particularly when she required blood transfusions.

He explained that out of love and commitment, he donated blood for her multiple times, standing in as her primary support system through recurring health crises.

Exhaustion leads to difficult decision

However, as her condition worsened and hospital visits became more frequent, he said the emotional and physical strain became overwhelming, forcing him to reconsider the relationship.

“I loved her deeply and did everything I could, including donating blood countless times. But it got to a point where I was exhausted, both physically and emotionally, and I had to step back,” he said.

He added, “I told her we could remain friends, but she didn’t take it well. After I left, I also stopped donating blood. Not long after, she became very ill and passed away. Since then, I’ve not been able to forgive myself.”
