The announcement was made during the groundbreaking ceremony for the arena, held on Wednesday in Benin City.

Rema, who was in his hometown for a homecoming concert at Ogbe Stadium, participated in the ceremony by laying the first block of the new arena.

The governor, in his remarks, expressed his delight in having the internationally acclaimed artist present for this significant event.

It was a pleasure to have our global music icon, Rema, join me in performing the groundbreaking ceremony for the 6,000-capacity Edo Arena. The arena, to be named ‘Rema’s Dome,’ is located at the former Garrick Memorial School Ground on Ekenhuan Road in Benin City,” Obaseki shared via his social media platform, X, following the event.

Governor Obaseki further explained that the Edo Arena is designed to be a versatile venue, capable of hosting a variety of events including concerts, national conferences, symposiums, and other large gatherings.

He emphasized that the arena would serve as a catalyst for tourism, attracting visitors to experience the rich culture of Edo State, and, in turn, creating employment opportunities for the youth.

Rema, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, has consistently celebrated his Edo roots through his music.

His recent hit, “Benin Boys,” featuring fellow Edo-born artist Shallipopi, pays homage to Benin City and the legacy of the ancient Benin Empire.
