Military arrest popular Nollywood actor over alleged involvement in coup plot against Tinubu government

Veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker Stanley Amandi has been arrested by the Nigerian military over his alleged involvement in a foiled coup plot aimed at overthrowing President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

According to an exclusive report by Premium Times, Amandi, a former chairman of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Enugu State chapter, was taken into custody in September 2025 alongside several military officers accused of planning a violent takeover of the government.

Sources cited in the report alleged that the plot involved plans to assassinate top government officials, including President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas.

On Monday, the Defence Headquarters confirmed that it had uncovered a plot to illegally remove the Tinubu administration from power. In a statement, the military said investigations into the matter had been concluded and forwarded to the appropriate superior authorities in line with existing regulations.

The Defence Headquarters described the probe as comprehensive, noting that it followed established procedures and examined all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the implicated personnel. The military added that a number of officers were found to have been involved in activities inconsistent with the ethics, values, and professional standards of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, and that those indicted would be arraigned before military judicial panels.

Stanley Amandi is a well-known figure in the Nigerian film industry, with credits as an actor, director, producer, and production manager. His notable works include The Album and Tiger King, both of which he directed, as well as Cornerstone and Once Upon a Dream, where he appeared as an actor in 2024.

Reports also noted that Amandi’s last activity on Instagram was on September 19, 2025, shortly before his reported arrest.
