Actress Adeyiga Opens Up On Struggles As A Woman In Nollywood

With more than ten years of experience in Nigeria’s dynamic film industry, Mariam Olaide Adeyiga has opened up about the hurdles she’s had to overcome as a woman in the field. From her early stage performances to producing culturally significant films, her journey has been both inspiring and challenging.

In a recent interview with The Nation, Adeyiga shed light on the gender-specific obstacles she has encountered. “There’s no denying the difficulties gender stereotypes, being typecast, the invisible emotional burden, and the pressure to compromise just to get ahead,” she revealed.

She added, “Over time, I’ve learned to stick to my principles, say no to anything that doesn’t sit right with me, and stay close to people who truly value my craft.”

Highlighting positive changes in the industry, she said, “The landscape is evolving. More women are stepping into roles as directors, producers, and decision-makers. It’s empowering to witness and be part of that progress.”

Since launching her professional acting career in 2013, Adeyiga says her passion for storytelling has been her driving force.

“Acting gives me the chance to live different lives and share stories that often go untold. Hearing from people who say a role I played helped them heal or brought them joy reminds me just how meaningful this work truly is,” she shared.
