Even the healthiest of marriages has its ups and downs. However, there are a few key relationship components that distinguish a rock solid union from a flirtation. Living as a married couple differs from life as a single person in that obligations shift and roles are reestablished. When you get married, some things you used to be able to do are no longer acceptable. Continue reading to find out more.
1. Keeping secrets.
Make it a point to chat about your day and any concerns you may have, no matter how little they may seem. Perhaps you’re self-conscious about not getting that promotion, and now you’re feeling bad because you used retail therapy to cope. It’s not healthy to keep quiet about your purchasing spree because it can become routine. Wouldn’t it be hurtful if your partner also told white lies? Relationships are built on trust, and if you can’t own up to minor infractions, it’ll be far more difficult to get the courage to have difficult conversations.
2. Checking up on your ex-lover
It makes no difference if you’ve been over them for a long time or if they messaged you initially. This is someone you formerly loved, and old sentiments can resurface, complicating your relationship with your wife. The past must be left in the past.
3. Not showing gratitude.
Thank your spouse for the things they do, especially if they are anticipated. When one of you is stuck doing something tedious, such as filling out tax paperwork, gratitude goes a long way. Even if your partner enjoys mowing the lawn, don’t overlook the importance of expressing gratitude for well-kept grass.
4. Complaining about your wife
Marital problems are a personal subject that should be kept secret. You may believe it is acceptable to complain about your wife to her sister or brother, but it is not. Worse even, if you’re venting your frustrations to friends who have no business knowing about it. If you’re frustrated with your wife, the greatest thing you can do is talk to her about it in a healthy way.
5. Never apologizing or acknowledging you’ve made a mistake.
Love Story went a little too far with the line “Love means never having to say you’re sorry.” We’re all grownups here, and if you make a mistake or hurt someone’s feelings, you must apologize. Sure, it’s simpler to make excuses for bad behavior, or even worse, to blame the other person, but you’re no longer in kindergarten.
6. Messages sent from a secret messaging app
While complete transparency in a marriage isn’t ideal, and keeping things to oneself might be beneficial at times, going to such efforts to keep particular messages private is a sign that you’re feeling guilty about something. You shouldn’t be doing it in the first place if that’s the case.
7. You take your partner for granted.
One of the worst marriage blunders you can make is to use the ring on your finger as an excuse to take your partner for granted. Your partner may have promised to love and respect you for the rest of your life, but that doesn’t mean they don’t deserve the same love and respect you’ve always shown them. “Assuming your partner will do what they’ve done without being acknowledged will harm your relationship, whether it’s putting out the garbage or making the bed.
